Chlorophyll is known to be rich in vitamins, antioxidants and other therapeutic properties that have the potential to benefit not just plants but the human body too. While there may not be any substantial proof whether chlorophyll is directly beneficial for acne-prone skin or not, many have experienced a reduction in the redness and acne-scarring post ingesting liquid chlorophyll with water. This green pigment other than with water can also be consumed as supplements or directly by green leafy vegetables. Gwyneth Paltrow's beauty website Goop and Kourtney Kardashian's Poosh also list out the benefits of consuming chlorophyll in the diet.
Dermatologists use what they call "photodynamic therapy" which as a concept uses chlorophyll-like substances to attract sunlight to the skin. When this chemical substance is added to the skin, it has the potential to kill acne-forming bacteria. In an attempt to protect the skin, chlorophyll may over-sensitise the skin and it is suggested to take it in smaller doses to begin with after consulting your dermatologist.

So Should One Try This Trend Then?
As a short term process, chlorophyll can be beneficial for some but it cannot be seen as a long term goal for the skin, especially when living in tropical and hot regions like India. Since chlorophyll over-sensitises the skin, one is more susceptible to rashes and sunburn when outdoors after consuming this in liquid form. Using chlorophyll topically too should be with your dermatologist's consultation only as it can hamper with the sun's exposure and create sunburns easily. Healthier alternative of the chlorophyll beauty trend is to experiment with different green smoothies using leafy veggies like kale, spinach, rocket, basil, celery and broccoli that are chlorophyll-rich. Not only will your skin benefit from this but it will also improve digestion, increase immunity and keep your weight in check. Now who doesn't want that, eh?
