You've possibly read endless headlines and scrolled through hundreds of stories about changing your diet and using the right concealer to cover up your dark circles. So the latest social media trend might come as a bit of a shock to you. It has to do with dark circles in the under-eye area but it's nothing to do with concealing them. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Influencers like Sara Carstens and Danielle Marcan have taken to platforms like Instagram and TikTok to showcase tutorials where they draw on dark circles to their otherwise radiant skin. Yes, really. Their weapon of choice is a brown shade of lipstick, which when smudged over the under-eye area, resembles one's eyes after a week of no sleep.

Both videos have gathered over a couple of million views between them but the under-eye dark circle trend doesn't simply aim to be a gimmicky stunt. Danielle explains the trend in her Instagram caption, "In 2021 I'm accepting all my insecurities. Maybe even highlighting them and wearing them with confidence." It shines a light on dark circles to normalise them and make one feel like they don't need to hide them anymore.

The thought behind it definitely is sweet. Dark circles can leave so many anxious about what treatments to take, what makeup to use and what foods to eat in order to get of their under-eye problems. In reality, they're nothing to be ashamed with even the best of us sporting dark circles after long nights partying or watching TV. However, it can feel a little on the nose for the majority who already have dark circles without needing to draw them in. Nevertheless, the inspiration behind the trend can certainly be appreciated and will make everyone think twice when they reach for the concealer next.
