The Perils Of Being Overdressed: You Look Fancy, Nobody Else Does

If you're a classic over-dresser, you'll know the feeling all too well

We've all been there, right? You show up to a party wearing a great dress, maybe with sequins, possibly bodycon, and you look sensational. Except, when you get there, everyone else is in jeans. Umm, oops? See for reference Kareena Kapoor, who wore a low-cut, form-fitting, sparkling scarlet Bibhu Mohapatra dress to the launch of her sister-in-law Soha Ali Khan's book The Perils Of Being Moderately Famous. Kareena looked like a million bucks in hr va-va-voom outfit (seriously, she was pregnant this time last year and she looks like this now - we want her genes) but, it has to be said, she was just a bit (ok, a lot) overdressed for the relatively casual event.

Especially when photographed with the other Pataudis - woman of the moment Soha was in jeans, Sharmila Tagore was in an understated sari. The Pataudis looked groomed and well turned out but only Kareena looked like she was headed to cocktails, the family seemed like they were going back home for games night.

Now, Kareena didn't seem at all discomfited and if you are the sort of girl who breaks out the metallic lip and eyelash extensions to do the coffee run, you wouldn't have been either.

But not all of us mean to look black tie when the invite says casual chic (and some of us deliberately dress down rather than risk standing out in a crowd). But what happens when you didn't get the memo, or you decided to wear your new dress anyway and then wished you hadn't?

If you're a classic over-dresser, you'll know the feeling all too well. So here are a few tips to keep in mind before the next time you end up looking overdressed among your lot.

1. Check The Dress Code

Check with the hosts about what the dress code is. Then ask about what they intend to wear. A good rule of thumb is to never upstage the hosts with your outfit. Once you've asked, you will automatically try to stop yourself from being OTT because it might be perceived as a deliberate slight by the hosts.

2. Check With Attendees

If you're heading to a function with family, friends or colleagues, check with them what they are wearing or what they wore the previous time they attended. Even if you don't like the answer, don't deviate too far away from what everyone else is wearing. As a gift to yourself, maybe you can add a bold lip or a funky piece of jewellery to stay one step ahead, but comfortably shy of the 'overdressed' label.

3. Carry Something Flexible

Despite your best efforts, if you have the sneaky suspicion that you've overdone it again, carry a casual multi-purpose accessory like a denim jacket or a crossbody bag. So even if you are overdressed, that will help bring it down a few notches.

4. Maybe It's In Your Head

A lot of the time, while you're stressing about being overdressed, others are only admiring your style and the effort you obviously put in being well turned out. Ultimately, it's just clothes. And they look only as good as the wearer feels. So once you've put on your outfit and stepped out, forget about it and have the time of your life.

And hey, if you are a Kareena Kapoor kind of gal, you will rock up to the party looking smoking and happily spend the evening putting everyone else in the shade - most likely, there will be a fair number among the crowd wishing they had your chutzpah.
