It is the most beautiful time of the year when festivities are in full swing in all parts of India. In a country like ours, festivities are the true essence of life where each occasion is celebrated like a grand party. One can barely miss the markets and streets lit up larger than life with bangle sellers and mehendi stalls at every nook and corner and that's when you know that Karwa Chauth is near. Nights before the actual festival, you'll notice women flocking to buy bangles, bindis and standing in long queues to apply mehendi on their hands. Karwa Chauth is mostly observed by married women to pray and fast for the longevity of their husbands. As part of the tradition, women adorn as newlywed brides in 'sola shringaar' wearing shades of red, applying sindoor and mehendi - all that are auspicious symbols of a newlywed bride. Tradition has is that the darker the stain of the mehendi, the more beloved you are by your husband and mother-in-law. But who wants boring mehendi? Gear up for Karwa Chauth with some of the most popular mehendi designs out there.

1. Indian Mehendi Designs

Indian mehendi designs are beautiful traditional designs that have commonly been used since time immemorial. Creepers with floral patterns and geometric patterns are seen in many traditional texts and paintings and are usually incorporated in these designs on the palm. Paisley patterns that are intertwined with floral patterns and peacocks are also super popular in the Indian mehendi design style. This is the most commonly made and seen design style all throughout the country and women can get it done from anywhere getting a small pattern on the palm to over the elbows.

Payal's bridal henna from way back in August. I can't believe it's been almost 8 months since you two got married. @mohitajmeri @payalgandhii! Feels like it was just yesterday! For one of the customizations, there was no doubt that we had to incorporate Payal's love for dance in her henna. Can you make out what the other customization is? (It's where where Mohit popped the question!) . . I had an interesting question on my Q&A the other day (and maybe you can help me answer), “What do you think is your signature design?” It's always harder to be the judge of your own work but if I had to use a design to answer that question, it would be this one. I use this layout, the symmetry, the elements so frequently that it just feels like my classic signature design. What do you think? Am I right?

2. Arabic Mehendi Designs

Arabic mehendi designs are much denser in the way it is applied and unlike the Indian style not necessarily filled up on the entirety of the hand or feet. Popular patterns include outlines of vines, floral patterns and leaves with denser outlines. Since the design does not cover the whole time usually, this mehendi style takes lesser time to dry as well.

3. Minimal Floral Designs

You have to agree that there is something so gratifying having floral designs so delicately drawn on your hand that they could replicate an actual flower. We love minimal designs in general and when they're floral ones, it just makes it all the more worth applying it on our hands. Most of these floral designs and made in the Arabic or Indo-Arabic style. For those ladies who usually hate applying mehendi, this is a great way also to get away with applying too much mehendi as well.

4. Bangle/Band Design

It is no surprise that a woman is only helpless in two situations when her nail polish and mehendi is drying up. Applying mehendi can temporarily make you feel helpless for a while and that is why the band or bangle style design comes in to rescue you. If you're restless or are always on the go but don't want to compromise on beautiful henna art on your hand then this style is perfect for you. Floral or geometric designs or a combination of both can look beautiful on the back of your hand and wrists while allowing you to do everything you want to do.
