The Met Gala returns in the spring of 2023 for fashion's annual dose of drama

The Met Gala returns to the first Monday of May for fashion's biggest night. The Met Gala is a charitable ball held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York at the onset of spring and without a doubt makes for one of the most memorable nights of the year in the world of fashion. The upcoming exhibition will centre around the late fashion maestro and fashion empress Anna Wintour's close confidante, designer Karl Lagerfeld. The theme for this year's Costume Institute upcoming exhibition is 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty.' The gala is in honour of the late designer who sadly passed away in 2019, at aged 85. The exhibition will pay tribute to his genius co to the world of fashion through his life and iconic designs with inspired works from his friends and collaborators.

The event draws in the biggest names of fashion who dress up to the nines in adherence to the theme of the year, usually in creations by the world's most influential fashion designers. Karl Lagerfeld has taken Chanel and Fendi to new heights with his vision along with his own brand that lives up to his design language to this day. To nobody's surprise, the late designer has dressed many famous names on the Met pink carpet for years since its inception. Anna Wintour is an obvious bet but others who have joined the list are Met veteran Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne and Penelope Cruz to name a few.

The ball tends to raise millions of dollars through the annual exhibition from the sale of tickets which are bought by designers and brands. Tickets from anywhere around $35,000 with tables ranging from $200,000 to $300,000, a steep jump from the previous year's prices reportedly seeming approximately $20,000 less in comparison. According to a recent announcement, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penelope Cruz and Roger Federer will be co-chairing the event.

Karl Lagerfeld's design style was traditional at its core but with a futuristic dimension to pivot ahead. No wonder, his era rested solely on his shoulders till the time of his untimely demise. It will be interesting to see what the many celebrities bring to the forefront from the designer's life. Some will choose references and translate them literally with the designer's signature language, some will keep it subtle with inspiration derived from his life. One can expect interpretations of some of his most memorable creations, or tongue-in-cheek references to some of his most controversial moments or even his personal style with his best friend, Choupette, his beloved cat. A clear tribute to the late designer could simply even be in some of his own creations masterfully curated by all the fashion houses he has headed from their archival creations. Owing to the growing trend of picking vintage pieces, we don't see how this isn't the best opportunity of them all.

Wearing vintage may not be an option for everyone though, after Kim Kardashian's experience of wearing Marilyn Monroe's iconic Happy Birthday Mr President embellished gown last year. But we know for sure that fashion's glossiest red carpet event will live up to its name and provide room for more experimentation as a benchmark for years to come.
