Have You Been Shampooing Your Hair All Wrong?

Shampooing may seem easy but we continue to make the silliest mistakes while washing our hair. Thankfully, that's about to change.

Have You Been Shampooing Your Hair All Wrong?

Shampooing can seem like the easiest process in the world. Simply squirt, lather and rinse, right? Well, it's not as easy as it looks. There are plenty of shampoo mistakes that we all make without even knowing, which leave us with limp, lackluster hair. To turn that around, find out where you've been going wrong with your shampoo routine today.

Mistake #1: You're choosing the wrong shampoo

Every hair type works differently and needs hair care that's suited for it. The biggest mistake one can make is blindly following a shampoo recommendation without it being the right fit. "Shampoo is the foundation of every hair care routine, so ensure that your shampoo is moisturising or clarifying depending on your hair type and texture," advises hairstylist Zahabia Lacewalla.

Mistake #2: You aren't focusing on your roots

The primary focus of shampoo is to cleanse your scalp of build-up and dirt so if you aren't doing that, you're doing it all wrong. Many worry about the lather and foam in the lengths but don't bother yourself with that. Dilute your shampoo and lather your scalp with it, using your fingertips and then move to the rest for your length.

Mistake #3: You're going too hot

Granted, hot water feels wonderful, especially in the winter. We feel you. However, it could be doing more harm than good. Hot water dries out the hair cuticles and leaves them frizzy. Choose lukewarm water for your next shower and make your final rinse an icy cold one to seal the cuticles.

Mistake #4: You aren't soaking enough

How many times have you quickly sped through shampooing to find your hair dull and limp? That's often the result of not soaking your hair thoroughly before. Says Zahabia, "It's important to make sure your hair is completely soaked before shampooing. This ensures it is absorbent enough for the hair products to work well."

Mistake #5: You aren't rinsing well

If you find your hair dull and scalp itchy, it's probably because it isn't washed out thoroughly. When there is residual shampoo left in your hair, it accumulates and clogs the scalp. As a result, hair becomes oily and the scalp, scratchy. Remedy this by thoroughly rinsing your hair post shampooing until you feel a stretchy, clean feeling at your roots.

Here’s a step-by-step video guide to shampoo your hair the right way.

Make sure you enlist the help of the right  hair care products, give your tresses plenty of nourishment and cleanse your hair gently yet thoroughly - that's all you need to get luscious, bouncy locks.
