Your parents and your partner not getting along can't be easy; but it could happen. While we all wish that everything could always be picture perfect with a happy ending, unfortunately that's not always the reality.
If you're struggling to get your parents to like your partner or vice a versa, here are a few things that could help you.
1. Don't take it as a personal failure
Your parents don't like your partner or vice a versa or both. It's not your fault. Taking it as a personal failure or feeling guilty about it will only make things harder for you.
So, instead of fretting about why it is what it is, go on and keep your relationship up with them the way you usually would.
Talk to your parents as much and how you did before you realised your partner wasn't too fond of them. Similarly, don't let your demeanour change towards your partner because of a negative word from your parents.
It's important in such a situation to keep their feelings about each other aside and continue to develop, hone and respect your individual relationships with them.
2. Don't bring it up in a fight
Not everyone likes confrontation and not every situation can be sorted out by one. In a situation like this, it is best if you find the time to sit with them in a relaxed setting and talk to them about their issues - individually. Find the time to sit with them separately and talk to them honestly about how you feel. Express to them, without getting aggressive or losing your cool, how much you wish they would work at resolving things or at least try and understand each other.
3. Let it develop, slowly
Let them take their time. If they take longer than you thought to resolve things, let them. Don't stress yourself out if you don't see the result of your persuasive effort immediately. Rushing the process or forcing them to spend time together can sometimes create feelings of resentment.
4. Stay positive
In trying to make everyone get along and not getting what you want immediately, don't lose heart or get jaded. Remember, you're the only common link between your parents and your partner - if you give up or begin to develop negative feelings towards the situation, little good will come off it. Instead and more importantly, try and nurture positive feelings amongst your parents and partner. Perhaps the love that they have for you and the love you have for each of them could help develop a positive relationship between them.
