Bus driver held for crushing kids in sleep in Jaipur

Jaipur: The city police arrested the driver of a mini-bus in a hit-and-run case on Tuesday. According to police, the accused, identified as Umaruddin, 26, had crushed two children to death while they were sleeping on the roadside in Shastri Nagar area, on Monday morning.

Umaruddin, a resident of Qureshi Colony in Khetari House area was arrested late on Tuesday evening. Police have also seized the vehicle involved in the accident.

Two children Arif, 12, and Gulab, 13, were crushed to death when they were sleeping on the roadside. As the spot was commonly used for parking of mini-buses and pick-up vans, etc, the cops suspected that the incident might have happened while parking vehicles.

Station house officer (Sanjay Circle) Nathu Lal said that police browsed through a list of all such vehicles to identify the erring. "After zeroing-in on the minibus, which was usually parked where bodies of two boys were recovered, we questioned the driver. He then confessed and the police arrested him," Lal said.

The accused was booked under Section 279 and 304 A of IPC for causing death by negligent act, the SHO said. The police said Umaruddin used to run the bus on route number 15 from Harmara to Mali ki Kothi.

During the investigation Umaruddin said that on Monday, at about 5 am, he reached to his vehicle and ran over the boys unknowingly as they were sleeping on a discarded mattress under the bus.

The driver could neither see them nor suspect that somebody was being crushed and did not even hear any voice or cries. "He realised the fact only after the children died," a police official quoted him saying.
