Singapore: A 24-year-old Indian was today jailed for nine weeks for molesting an Indonesian woman in a lift of a residential apartment in Singapore.

Palanivel Rajesh, who worked in Singapore as a gardener, pleaded guilty to molesting the 25-year-old domestic worker in Jurong West area on April 30, The Straits Times reported.

The court heard that the victim was returning to the apartment after buying newspapers for her employer when Mr Rajesh waylaid her and asked for her phone number.

After she said that she did not have a mobile phone, he followed her into the lift and began molesting her after finding her alone.

The victim then shouted for help and ran out of the lift as Mr Rajesh managed to flee. Later when she found him cutting grass nearby, the woman called the police.

Mr Rajesh could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined punishment.
