West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 Phase 1 Voting Highlights: West Bengal voted today in the first phase of the assembly elections, with polling being held in 152 constituencies across north Bengal and several districts in the southern part of the state.
The state recorded the highest-ever turnout in phase 1 at 92.59 per cent.
For Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the opposition, the BJP, the assembly elections are a desperate battle amid the political firestorm over the voter list revision.
The second phase of polling will be held on April 29, and the votes will be counted on May 4.

Additionally, 3 individuals were arrested in Dubrajpur as part of the statewide effort to maintain order.

A formal complaint has been filed by the Congress with the Election Commission in relation to the matter.

The BJP on Thursday alleged that its Kumarganj nominee Suvendu Sarkar was manhandled by Trinamool Congress supporters during polling in the first phase of the West Bengal assembly elections.
Sarkar was beaten up while he was going to a polling booth in the constituency after he came to know about chaos allegedly created by TMC activists near the voting centre.
Sarkar, who had to run through the field with a lone security personnel to save himself, later told reporters that he was surrounded by goons and beaten up.
"I did not see any central force personnel during the incident," he said.

West Bengal has recorded 62.18 per cent voting till 1 pm, with Paschim Medinipur leading with 65.77 per cent polling.
The state recorded a voter turnout of over 41 per cent till 11 am.
Voters At Gorabazaar Polling Booth Complain Of EVM Glitch, Congress' Adhir Chowdhury Dials Official
Voters at a polling booth in Gorabazaar complained of an EVM malfunction, following which Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury dialled an election official and requested to resolve the issue.
"The common voters, who are under sweltering heat, are forced to go back to their homes," he was heard telling the official.

Bengal Elections Phase One: Paschim Medinipur Records Max Turnout
District-wise data showed Paschim Medinipur is currently leading in voter turnout with 44.69 per cent, followed by Jhargram 43.71 per cent, Bankura 43.22 per cent and Purba Medinipur 42.16 per cent.
A relatively lower turnout was recorded in Malda at 38.22 per cent, Cooch Behar 38.56 per cent and Alipurduar 38.80 per cent, Election Commission data showed.
Trinamool Accuses Cops Of Acting In BJP's Favour In Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari Responds
The TMC has accused the police of working in favour of the BJP in Nandigram, with Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleging that the "goons" of the ruling party were threatening people in the area.
Addressing a press conference, state minister Shashi Panja alleged that police personnel deployed in Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district were acting in favour of the BJP.
She said a TMC delegation met Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal and lodged a formal complaint, seeking the removal of two police officers from poll duty.
"The presence of these officers is raising serious concerns about the neutrality in the polling process," she claimed.
The BJP rejected the allegations, with Adhikari alleging that "TMC-sheltered goons" were threatening voters.
"Murder accused Sheikh Sahabuddin is roaming in the area freely. He is visiting booths where Hindu voters are in the majority and threatening them. I am visiting those booths to reassure the voters," he told reporters.
"I am not here for Hindu-Muslim polarisation. I am here to fight criminals and stop them. The criminals here are TMC leaders belonging to a particular community," he alleged.

West Bengal Polls 2026: Congress Alleges EVM Glitch In Suri
Congress's Suri candidate Sanjoy Adhikari alleged he was unable to cast his vote despite reaching his polling station at 7 am due to an EVM glitch.
"We have already lodged a complaint with the district magistrate and the local polling officer, yet the machine has not been repaired so far. Hundreds of voters are already standing in queues before the booth, and there's no EC representative here who can tell us when polls will resume," Adhikari told the PTI news agency.
He said the party has urged the EC to extend the polling hours at the affected booth or consider re-polls if the EVM isn't restored quickly.

PM Modi Appeals People Of Bengal To Vote In Large Numbers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the people of West Bengal to take part in the voting for the Assembly elections.
He especially urged the youth and women of the state to vote in record numbers.
