Uttarakhand floods: Chief Minister Bahuguna announces additional compensation to victims

Dehra Dun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Wednesday announced that his government would provide the same amount of compensation that the Centre is providing to the flood-hit victims in the state. Mr Bahuguna today visited the disaster-hit Uttarkashi district.

At least 28 people lost their lives in the district after flash floods caused by heavy rains wreaked havoc in the region on August 4.

Mr Bahuguna also said the affected families, which lost their houses in the calamity, would also be provided Rs 2,000 per month as house rent for the next six months.

He also announced to provide financial assistance to the families of Nepali labourers who lost their lives in the disaster from CM relief fund.

The chief minister said a team would soon carry out a survey of damage in the district.

Mr Bahuguna visited several affected areas including Tiloth, Joshiyara and Gangotri and met the affected families to inquire about their problems.

In Gangori, people apprised him of their losses due to the natural calamity and asked him for help.

Stating that the government is with them in the hour of distress, Mr Bahuguna assured that not a single affected family would be left without relief.

He said immediate relief amount has been increased to Rs 5,400 from Rs 2,700 per family.

Pointing out that the commercial institutions are not covered under the Centre's relief norms, he said the state government would talk with to banks to provide easy loans to them and also arrange for the subsidy.

The chief minister directed the officials present on the occasion to expedite repairing of roads, bridges so that people living in the areas could be reached.

Later, Mr Bahuguna organised a 'Janta Milan' and listened to the grievances of the people. He said an estimated loss of Rs 600 crore has been caused by the natural disaster.

Mr Bahuguna said a team from the Centre would assess the damage caused by the calamity and appropriate funds would be sought.
