A man drowned his 19-year-old sister and then sat with the body for an hour before calling the police and confessing, on Monday in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur. Aditya Yadav had allegedly tried to force his sister to end her relationship. He sat with the body for an hour and a half before calling the police and confessing to the crime.
Nitya Yadav, a class 12 student, had allegedly been dating a man for three years. Lately, Aditya had seen her apply sindoor (vermilion), a mark of married women. Aditya had argued with his sister several times, but she had refused to end her relationship.
On Sunday, Nitya allegedly left the house and didn't return. The next day, she was seen at a nearby restaurant with her lover. Aditya Yadav allegedly tried to bring her back home, but when Nitya resisted, he dragged her to a secluded spot two and a half kilometres away from their home.
Aditya told the police that he thrashed his sister, leading to a head injury, and pushed her into a canal. He sat with his sister's body for an hour and a half, and then called the police, informing them of the crime.
Aditya has been taken into custody and legal action is being taken, said Jitendra Srivastava, Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur.
Aditya lived with two sisters and a brother. After his father's death, Aditya took on the responsibility of educating his sisters and worked as a labourer to support them.
