Bodinayakanur assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu's Theni district has long been one of the state's most politically significant seats. It gained prominence when former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa chose Bodi for her assembly debut in 1989.Since then, the constituency has largely remained an AIADMK stronghold, though it is now witnessing a potentially dramatic political shift.
Jayalalithaa had entered the assembly for the first time in 1989, winning from Bodinayakanur. Since then, the DMK has managed to win the seat only twice. In the last three Assembly elections -- 2011, 2016, and 2021, O Panneerselvam secured consecutive victories as an AIADMK candidate.
The political landscape, however, has changed significantly, with Panneerselvam now contesting as a DMK candidate, making this election particularly crucial.
Located at the foothills of the Western Ghats, Bodinayakanur is widely known as India's "cardamom capital". It hosts one of the largest cardamom procurement centers, attracting farmers even from neighboring Kerala due to easier access to transport.
Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy.
Farmers in the region, however, continue to raise key concerns.
Mango cultivation, a major activity in Theni after Salem, has been facing challenges. Despite good yields, farmers say they have struggled to secure fair prices over the past several years, leading to financial losses.
They are also demanding an extended water supply from the Mullaiperiyar dam through the 18th canal for irrigation.
On the political front, O Panneerselvam continues to enjoy goodwill among voters, owing to his long-standing connection with the constituency. During his tenure as MLA and Deputy Chief Minister, he facilitated the establishment of educational institutions and healthcare facilities in the region.
Yet, a key question remains: Can O Panneerselvam retain his winning streak as a DMK candidate? The constituency has a significant presence of communities such as Devanga Chettiyar, Thevar, and Naidu. Panneerselvam, who belongs to the Thevar community, has traditionally benefited from this support base.
But with his political loyalty now having shifted, there is a possibility that the equation is altered.
The AIADMK has fielded VT Narayanasamy, who is relatively less known among voters. The party is banking on its alliance with TTV Dhinakaran to consolidate Thevar votes. Dhinakaran had secured the second position in the Theni Lok Sabha constituency in 2024, which the party sees as a positive sign.
AIADMK leader J Jayavardhan, meanwhile, dismissed the impact of Panneerselvam's shift, saying he has lost relevance and that traditional AIADMK voters remain loyal to the party's "Two Leaves" symbol.
With multiple factors at play -- community dynamics, alliance strategies, and the personal influence of candidates -- Bodinayakanur is once again shaping up to be one of the most closely watched constituencies in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
