Russian's death an accident: Post-mortem

Russian's death an accident: Post-mortem
Panaji: Three days after 19-year-old Russian tourist Elena Sukhanova's mutilated body was found on a railway track in North Goa, the post-mortem report said on Monday that her death was an accident.

But it's a report that Vikram Verma, the lawyer appointed by the Russian Consulate to monitor the case, does not find convincing. Verma had also represented the family of British teenager Scarlette Keeling.

"There are many unanswered questions that need to be looked into," he said.

The police say their probe is still on. But while the authorities tightlipped, a shocking response came from the ruling party.

"Parents should take care of their children. The Consulate should be careful of not giving long visas to such young people," said Pratapsinh Rane, former chief minister of Goa.

Russians form one of the largest communities of tourists visiting Goa. But incidents like these have become a cause of concern not just for Russians tourists but tourists in general.

The Scarlett Keeling case had turned the spotlight on Goa's dark side. There are fears that incidents like these could reinforce that perception.
