Rome To Get Taste Of Kolkata During Mother Teresa's Canonisation

Volunteers will hold posters at 14 different places across Rome.

Kolkata: A month from today, Mother Teresa will be canonised at a grand ceremony at the Vatican. Among hundreds of people travelling from Kolkata to Rome for the event, are a group of youngsters who love Mother Teresa.

Leading a group of youngsters is Koutenya Sinha, a photographer who has taken several photographs of Kolkata's old buildings and people, among others. A total of 50.

The black and white photographs are now poster size and will be clipped to a rope resembling a clothesline. Volunteers will hold them up at 14 different places across Rome, starting August 24 till Mother Teresa becomes saint on September 4.

While some will sing, others will tell stories and play instruments to draw crowds and invite people to know the city synonymous with Mother Teresa.

"She served the poor in Kolkata. This was her city and we want to show it to the world. From August 24, we will stand at 14 places across Rome with the photos and tell people stories about Kolkata. We want the world to come to Mother Teresa's city," says Koutenya Sinha.

The youngsters Mr Sinha has roped in call themselves 'Nobodies' and are crowdfunding their way to Vatican. Astha Modi, who works with a public relations firm, wants to go because "everyone knows Mother Teresa is great. They should know Kolkata is great too".

Another volunteer, Sakhi Singhi, a student in the US said that she will halt at Rome to be part of the sainthood project. "We want to tell Rome why we love Kolkata and why Mother Teresa loved it too," she says.

Doing much of the backroom work is Srijita Roy Barman who runs an events management company, Spring Ideas. "I'd love to go to Rome but can't. Not enough funds. I am trying to raise some but all the 'Nobodies' will be living off pizza off the roadside for 10 days, nothing more," she says.

Commending the move by the youngsters of Kolkata, resident Noori Begum says, "It's a good idea. They will show off my Kolkata in Rome."
