Not quite FIFA, but Kerala has its own Kakas and Messis

Orumanayur, Kerala:

In this small village near Kerala's famous Guruvayur temple, flags of different countries contrive a makeshift canopy high above the main road.

As they flutter in the breeze amid the coconut trees, it's clear that an event you may have heard of in South Africa is making news here.

The people of Orumanayur aren't content to just watch matches on television. In this parallel football universe, it's an Argentina versus Brazil match that's underway. Nevermind that everyone on the Brazil team is Kaka with a Number 10 jersey.

A makeshift cricket pitch has been improvised further into a football ground.

No shoes. No goal posts. No problem!

One player's mundu comes undone as he dribbles his way across the field. But these are not the Golden Globes, and there are no wardrobe malfunctions. "The dress is not important, the game is," says the mundu-wearing player, unperturbed.

A man standing nearby states, "When the game starts, it's a holiday. No work happens here, everyone watches the match."

It's just not clear whether he means the match live from South Africa, or the one unfolding in his village.
