Jawaharlal Nehru's Wikipedia Page 'Edited' by Government Department: Congress

Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, with daughter Indira Gandhi

New Delhi:  Wikipedia pages on Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, were altered from a central government IP address, the Congress alleged today.

"There was an attempt to alter theWikipedia pages of Jawaharlal Nehru and Motilal Nehru. There was a sinister attempt to show that Jawaharlal Nehru was a Muslim. It doesn't matter whether he was a Muslim or a Hindu: he was an Indian. The government should conduct a full enquiry," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

Mr Surjewala said the act had been traced to the National Informatics Centre or NIC, the software provider of the government.

Jawaharlal Nehru led the first government of independent India and is the Congress party's tallest icon. Party president Sonia Gandhi was married to his grandson Rajiv Gandhi, a former prime minister who was assassinated in 1991.

Software that tracks anonymous Wikipedia edits reportedly traced changes that were made to entries on Nehru and his family on June 26.

One such edit was on Nehru's grandfather Gangadhar: "Gangadhar was born as a Muslim by the name of Ghiasuddin Ghazi but changed his name to a Hindu Ganga Dhar to escape British clutches."

Details of Nehru's friendship with Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of the last viceroy of British-ruled India, were also added to the page, say reports.

The changes were reportedly deleted by the online encyclopedia's editors.
