Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee got injured in an accident in Hooghly district.

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, who is also West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew, was injured and had to be rushed to hospital after his car met with an accident today.

Around 4:30 pm, Mr Banerjee's car hit a truck that was being towed on the National Highway 2 near Singur. It then turned turtle and fell into the grassy road divider. He was somehow pulled out of the wreckage and rushed to Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata.

His condition is reported to be stable. He has suffered some cuts below the eye. A CT scan has been done.

The chief minister was informed about the accident by Manash Bhuiyan of the Trinamool who was with the convoy. She immediately called the Director General of Police and asked him to investigate the cause of the accident.

Early reports suggested Mr Banerjee's driver may have fallen asleep. The chief minister asked the DGP to examine if the driver may have been drugged. "Such accidents have been happening too often to be taken lightly," she said.

She also said the police should review the fitness and skill of drivers the police was deploying. She also suggested thorough background checks.

Ms Banerjee also said that road accidents need to be taken seriously. "I have asked the police to book offenders under Section 304 or attempt to murder," she said.

Abhishek Banerjee is 29 and the MP from Diamond Harbour.
