5 Kerala Opposition Lawmakers Suspended For Vandalising Speaker's Dais

Five Kerala legislators have been suspended for their role in the violence and chaos inside the Kerala Assembly on March 13.

The Kerala assembly was adjourned on Monday after Chief Minister Oommen Chandy suspended five opposition legislators for their role in the violence and chaos inside the Kerala Assembly on March 13.

The resolution for suspending the five legislators from the Left Democratic Front was raised by Mr Chandy and later put to a voice vote. After the budget discussion was hastily cut short and the five suspended legislators refused to leave the House, the Speaker adjourned the Assembly until March 23.

Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan slammed the chief minister  for not taking any action against  legislators from the ruling United Democratic Front  who were involved in breach of Assembly rules. He called the suspension "one sided." The suspended legislators, K Kunjahammed Master, EP Jayarajan, V Sivankutty, KT Jaleel and K Ajith, will remain suspended for the enrire session.

Last Friday, the five members of the Kerala legislative assembly, among others, blocked the speaker, invaded the dais and broke mikes when Mr Mani was presenting the state budget. The opposition tried to prevent the presentation because of the bribery charges against Mr Mani.
