Indian Deputy High Commissioner summoned by Pakistan over cross-border firing

Islamabad: India's Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan was today summoned by the country's Foreign Office to register its protest on what it alleged as an "unprovoked attack" yesterday on one of its border posts by Indian troops.

Pakistani troops had, on Sunday, violated a ceasefire by firing mortar shells towards Indian army posts in Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir near the Line of Control. The Army retaliated to the Pakistani shelling for a brief period. But the Pakistani army alleged that one of its soldiers was killed and another was injured in the firing.

"The Deputy High Commissioner of India was called to the Foreign Office today and handed over a protest note on the unprovoked Indian attack on a Pakistani post in the Hajipir sector on January 06, 2013 which resulted in the Shahadat of a Pakistani soldier and injuries to the other.

"The Indian Government was strongly urged to take appropriate measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future," a press release from the Pakistan Foreign Office said.

The Indian Army, however, has denied the occurrence of any such incident "where our soldiers have attacked any Pakistani post."

Sources in the Army said this allegation by the Pakistani army seemed to be an attempt to cover up its firing on Indian posts in the Uri sector.
