In Karnataka, BJP's We Are Family line shows cracks

Bangalore: "It went off better than expected... All are happy," beamed BS Yeddyurappa, the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Quickly followed similar niceties from the Reddy camp which till a few days ago, publicly demanded that Yeddyurappa be sacked.

Janardhan Reddy, the Tourism Minister for Karnataka, gushed, "Just as you are seeing, you are also enjoying with us...how we are united."

But as a party track, We Are Family rings hollow for the BJP in Karnataka. Keep in mind that these pleasantries come after a meeting of the coordination committee - set up to ensure the party's fracture heals, or is at least, bandaged.

So delicate is the balance of power between the chief minister and the Reddy brothers, both ministers in his cabinet, that senior party leaders from Delhi attended the meeting.

Janardhan and Karunakaran Reddy, mining barons from Bellary, had gathered the support of nearly 60 MLAs as they took on the chief minister a few weeks ago. The real issue was that the Reddys want the government to lay off any policies that will affect their mining empire.

After much negotiation, a compromise was reached. Yeddyurappa had to sack one of his favourite ministers, Shoba Karandlaje, who was in charge of Rural Development; she was replaced by the Reddys' choice, Speaker of the House,  Jagadish Shettar; and a coordination committee was set up.

The fragile peace remains a concern for the BJP. "Most of the problem was due to lack of dialogue. So CM has to be more communicative," said party leader Sushma Swaraj.
