In Assam, Crorepati Candidates Brace For Poll Battle

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi faces a tough challenge in Assam Elections this year.

Guwahati: With assets of Rs 5.5 crore, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is far from the richest candidate in the state's Assembly Elections. His ministerial colleague Gautam Roy's son, Rahul Roy, is the richest among Congress candidates contesting with total assets of Rs 25 crore.

In comparison to his son's assets, Gautam Roy, 69, has total assets worth Rs 2.63 crore only, says Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) which is compiling a report from the affidavits filed by contesting candidates.

However, the richest contestant is lottery baron and former Congress lawmaker Moni Kumar Subba's 43-year old wife Jyoti Subba contesting as an Independent from Sootea constituency with total assets of Rs 288 crore, including Rs 141 crore movable and Rs 147 crore immovable assets.

The report of the advocacy group aiming said 36 of the 65 Congress nominees are crorepatis.

Meanwhile, BJP's chief ministerial candidate, state unit president and union sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal's assets add up to Rs 1.85 crore, while the party's poll alliance partner AGP's President Atul Bora's assets are only little more at Rs 2.25 crore, the report said.

Naren Sonowal of the regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) contesting for Naharkatia is the second richest contestant with assets worth Rs 33.94 crore, it added.

Voting for the assembly elections in Assam will take place in two phases on April 4 and 11 with the counting on May 19.
