IIT Upholds Decision to Expel 73 Students; Parents Consider Action

73 students were expelled by IIT Roorkee for underperformance

Roorkee: With IIT Roorkee deciding not to revoke the recent expulsion of 73 of its students for underperformance, their parents and guardians are now contemplating to either move court or approach the Union Ministry of Human Resource for justice.

In a meeting yesterday to review the expulsion, senior officials, including the director of the institute and heads of departments, concluded that there would be no change in the decision taken by the academic senate to expel 73 students who scored less than five CGPA in their second semester examinations, Registrar of IIT Roorkee Prashant Garg said.

The decision has caused disappointment among the parents and guardians of the students who are now planning either to go to court against the decision or approach the Human Resource Ministry seeking lenient reconsideration of the matter for the sake of their wards' futures.

Their contention is that the institute's website does not talk about any rule mandating expulsion of students who score less than five CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).

They also accused the institute of not making any effort towards improving the performance of the under-performing children.

They also contended that if the institute had to stick to the decision taken by the senate then why did it convene a meeting to review it.

"All we want is that our children should be given another chance to improve themselves so that their future is not ruined," said Santosh, mother of one of the expelled students whose guardians staged a dharna outside the campus of the institute.

"They may have neglected their studies and fared badly at one exam but given another chance they could improve themselves," Mahendra Singh, father of an expelled student from Pauri said.
