Highlights

  • It was reported that Dangal crossed Rs 2,000 crore mark worldwide
  • "Happy that our film has been so successful," said Aamir's spokesperson
  • In India, Aamir Khan's Dangal made over Rs 375 crore
New Delhi: Yes, Aamir Khan's Dangal has done brilliant business in China - just not as brilliant as reported. Last week, Forbes placed Dangal's worldwide collection as over Rs 2,000 crore, its totals boosted by ticket sales in China where the film has been running to full houses since May 5. Dangal is the first Indian film to fetch Rs 2,000 crore - only, it hasn't yet. A representative for Aamir Khan, 52, said today that the film still is a few crores away from this exalted number and that it's actual collection so far is Rs 1,864 crore. Dangal is still showing across China so chances are, the finish line will be crossed.

"We have been reading a lot of reports saying that Dangal has crossed 2,000 crores worldwide. Just to set the record straight, we want to clarify that Dangal's official worldwide gross collection figure as of Thursday is 1,864 crore," said Aamir's spokesperson in a statement.

Despite the busting of this particular myth, there's still plenty to celebrate. Dangal still holds several other records - most recently, Forbes placed it number five on the list of highest earning non-Hollywood films in the world.

"We are very happy that our film has been so successful, and what is of most value for Aamir Khan and the entire team of Dangal is the immense love the film has got from the audience across the globe. We are looking forward for the film to release in other untapped territories to reach more audience," Aamir's spokesperson said.

The Nitesh Tiwari-directed Dangal is the latest Aamir Khan film to receive a Chinese release and has been watched by Chinese premier Xi Jinping who told Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an international summit that he liked the film. Dangal released in China as Shuai Jiao Baba (Let's Wrestle, Dad) in May, months after it received a Christmas opening at home. Dangal made Rs 375 crore at the Indian box office, displacing Aamir's previous film PK and Salman Khan's 2016 blockbuster Sultan.

Dangal stars Aamir Khan as Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, father of wrestlers Geeta and Babita, played by actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra. TV star Sakshi Tanwar played Mahavir Phogat's wife Daya.
