Female condom programme a hit in six states

New Delhi: Addressing the problem of male partner not being interested in condom use, a female condom programme being implemented in six states has indicated high levels of acceptance among sex workers and nearly five per cent reduction in unprotected sex.

The Female Condom (FC) programme was implemented through selected NGOs in six states.

The results from the pre-programme assessment indicated high levels of acceptance of such condoms among sex workers and nearly five per cent reduction in unprotected sex, the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) said today.

Based on the encouraging results from the pre-programming phase, NACO has scaled up the female condom programme in four states -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra.

Another female condom programme being funded by UNFPA is being implemented states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Rajasthan.
