Three to four men on a bike first shot at him and then chopped off his neck with a sword, the police said. The murder took place in a village just four kilometers from the town of Pratapgarh in southern Rajasthan.

Mr Kumawat died on the spot even though people rushed to his rescue. The group of men escaped soon after attacking the worker.

Locals sat in protest with Mr Kumawat's body and demanded the arrest of the attackers at the earliest. With the attack taking place before the elections, there is also widespread anger in the BJP. Police have assured that action will be taken soon and that the attackers will be arrested.
