A man stabbed his wife with a sharp weapon during a fight at their home in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri, then consumed pesticide and surrendered at a nearby police station this morning.
Jahangir Alam and his wife, Ruksana Begum, got into an argument over a personal issue around 6 am, during which the accused attacked Ruksana with a sharp weapon. When Jahangir's mother tried to intervene and save Ruksana, he allegedly attacked her as well. She, however, managed to get out of the house with a deep, bloodied injury to her leg.
Hearing screams, the locals rushed to the spot.
By that time, Ruksana had died after suffering multiple injuries.
According to locals, Jahangir soon consumed pesticide and went to the Dhupguri police station with the sharp weapon to surrender.
Subsequently, he was arrested.
Jahangir and Ruksana had been married for around three years. The couple has a young son.
Family members and neighbours claimed that while their relationship appeared to be normal initially, fights between them had become frequent lately. The locals also alleged that Jahangir was addicted to some substances - which he consumed and created disturbances at home. He also used to assault his wife and threaten neighbours, they added.
Ruksana's body has been sent for post-mortem, and Jahangir's mother is undergoing treatment.
A police patrol team was deployed in the area to prevent any tension.
Police are investigating the exact motive behind the crime, officials said.
