Assam's Karbi Anglong tense, but no fresh violence

Diphu, Assam: Assam's Karbi Anglong district was quiet today, after three days of violence over a demand for statehood for the Karbi tribe, spurred by the Centre's announcement of statehood for Telangana a few days ago.

An indefinite curfew in the region was lifted today for four hours and may be relaxed again tomorrow. 17 companies of paramilitary forces are currently deployed at Karbi Anglong, one of the biggest and most backward districts in the country. The army today carried out flag marches and patrols in many areas of the state.

Over the last few days, mobs affiliated to various Karbi tribe student bodies repeatedly clashed with the police, resulting in one death in police firing. Many state transport buses and government vehicles were set on fire and government offices attacked and ransacked.

Rail services continued to remain suspended in the region for the third day running.
