28 cops killed in Chhattisgarh Naxal attack

Rajnangaon, Chattisgarh: In one of the worst Maoist attacks in Chattisgarh, 28 police personnel including a Superintendent of Police were killed in ambushes and landmine blasts in three separate incidents.

The attack took place in Rajnandgaon, just 68 km from Raipur, the state capital.  It also happens to be the state Chief Minister Raman Singh's assembly seat.

The SP of Rajnandgaon, Vinod Kumar Choubey was among those killed. The SP's team was ambushed by Maoists. The CRPF rushed 600 of its men to the site of attacks.

This comes within weeks of Lalgarh operations when Home Minister P Chidambaram declared the Communist Party of India (Maoist) a terrorist outfit.

The firing occurred in two phases; at first the Maoists killed policemen in a CRPF camp in Kerkatta village, and then, they targeted the SP when he arrived with reinforcements. Police sources say there are bodies lying everywhere.
