- The Avengers star Jeremy Renner takes over as leading man from Matt Damon but he plays a new character called Aaron Cross rather than rogue CIA agent Jason Bourne.
- The movie is a 'time-quel' which revolves around Agent Cross who attempts to escape from his CIA officers who want to execute him. With the help of genetic scientist Marta Shearing, played by Rachel Weisz, he tries to expose the crimes committed by the officers.
- Agent Cross' on-the-run story takes place simultaneously with the incidents of the 2007 movie, The Bourne Ultimatum.
- "It's not a prequel or a sequel, it's the same time-quel," producer Frank Marshall had said in a press conference.
- The film is loosely based on Eric Van Lustbader's book 'The Bourne Legacy' unlike the previous films which were based on Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne novels.
- The film directed by Tony Gilroy, also stars Edward Norton as the bad guy. Joan Allen and Albert Finney reprise their roles from the previous trilogy.
