London: Fans of John Denver have suffered a setback after a campaign to name a peak in the Colorado Rockies after the singer has been blocked by the US officials.

The movement gained momentum in the recent weeks when more than 2,000 people signed a petition to rename Mount Sopris in honour of Denver, who wrote his hit 1972 track Rocky Mountain High while camping nearby, reported Contactmusic.

But the plan suffered a snag when the officials at the US board on Geographic Names insisted that renaming peaks could be forbidden under a federal wilderness law.

Denver, an Aspen resident and an avid pilot, was killed in 1997 when the experimental aircraft he was piloting crashed into the ocean near Pacific Grove, California.

He was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the 1970s and died at the age of 53.
