Rajkummar Rai's new film Newton is getting a lot of love at the box office over the weekend. The movie opened to a relatively cold response at the ticket counters on Friday, making a shade under one crore but bettered its collection figures by some 162 per cent on Saturday, reported trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Newton, which recorded some 96 lakhs on Friday, fetched over two crores on Saturday, Mr Adarsh tweeted. "Newton shows remarkable growth 162.5% on Saturday...," he tweeted. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap congratulated the film's director Amit V Masurkar, saying: "That day when you wake up to the news that a deserving film makes a deserving box office. Newton Shines... super happy."

On the day of its release, Rajkummar also announced that Newton has been zeroed in as India's official entry for the Oscars next year. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted the movie, which is a social satire, was selected by a jury of 14 members out of a collection of 26 movies.

In his review for NDTV, Raja Sen describes the protagonist as "close to being irritatingly earnest," and goes to say about the movie that: "This is also symptomatic of Newton itself, a film that, while striving to be admirably dry, proves at times to be achingly dull. The film's go-nowhere pace seems to be a conscious decision but its highest, most telling moments come through scintillating lines of dialogue (take a bow, Mayank Tewari) and actorly flourishes from a great ensemble."

On Friday, Newton released along with Sanjay Dutt's comeback movie Bhoomi and Shraddha Kapoor's Haseena Parkar.
