Dangal Box Office Collection Day 1: Aamir Khan's Film Collects 29 Crores

Aamir Khan's Dangal: Aamir Khan plays Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat

Highlights

  • Dangal is expected to cross 100 crores in 3 days, says Taran Adarsh
  • Dangal opened to 50% full theatres on Friday
  • Dangal's international box office figures are also impressive
New Delhi: So, it's turning out to be true. On Friday, Trade analysts Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta predicted that Aamir Khan's much-anticipated wrestling drama Dangal will create "history" with its box office scores. Both Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta shared the first day collections on Saturday morning highlighting, yet again, that Dangal looks promising. Dangal has wrestled currency ban better than its Bollywood counterparts like Shah Rukh Khan's Dear Zindagi and Befikre - which opened in the wake of the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Dangal opened to theatres which recorded over 50% advance bookings for shows on the first day - December 23. In his review for NDTV Movies, Saibal Chatterjee wrote: "Rarely has a Bollywood actor sunk his teeth into a meaty character with such gumption and glory."

Taran Adarsh said that Dangal is not far from making 100 crores. Dangal is the 51-year-old actor's first film after 2014's blockbuster PK, which continues to be the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time, scoring Rs 700 crore or thereabouts worldwide.

Dangal packed a punch at the box office, said Taran Adarsh:

Komal Nahta added to the numbers:

The business analysts added that Dangal's performance at the theatres will be even better starting Saturday, courtesy 'terrific word of mouth':

Taran Adarsh shared "heart-warming" news on Friday:

Earlier this week, Aamir Khan said he is "always stressed before a release" and claimed to have hidden in a store room on the premises of Yash Raj Studios to battle nervousness. Aamir also confessed to the press that he had begun smoking again. "It's driving me crazy," he said.

Aamir, who hosted a screening for his friends and colleagues on Thursday, said he's nervous not about how much Dangal will fetch at the box office but about whether or not cine-goers will like it. "I'm really nervous. Yesterday I had literally been hiding in the store room of Yash Raj Films so that no one could see me. I have been constantly thinking about Dangal and it's driving me crazy. Numbers do not matter to me, neither do awards. The audience liking my film is equivalent to winning an award for me," he said.

Numbers are pouring in Aamir, whether you care or not. Salman Khan's family were special guests at Thursday's screening. Salman, whose wrestling film Sultan released in July this year, is both happy and sad about the feedback he received from his family:

Dangal is based on the life of Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained his daughters - Geeta and Babita - in wrestling. The Phogat sisters won India's first medals in female wrestling at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra featured as Geeta and Babita while Aamir played two versions of the protagonist - the young wrestling champion and a middle-aged father. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar star as younger Geeta and Babita. TV actress Sakshi Tanwar was Mahavir Phogat's wife Daya Kaur in the Nitesh Tiwari-directed film.
