London: A rare sheet of 10 stamps showing film star Audrey Hepburn smoking has fetched $ 600,000 (430,000 euros) at a charity auction in Berlin.

Two-thirds of the amount will go to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, which helps educate children in sub-Saharan Africa and one-third to UNICEF Germany, reported BBC online.

The German Postal Service printed 14 million of the stamps in 2001 depicting the actress as Holly Golightly in the cult film Breakfast at Tiffany's.

But Sean Ferrer, her son with actor and director Mel Ferrer, refused to grant copyright, saying the image had been altered, and all but a few sheets were destroyed.

Ferrer, 50, granted permission to auction a sheet in his possession for charity.

He said that he was thrilled that the sale Saturday  brought "focus on children in need," but wished the stamps had sold for a higher price.
