Woman abducted while returning from work, rescued after dramatic chase

New Delhi: A young woman returning home from work was chased and abducted in the capital by five men, including two college students, after a verbal duel in the early hours on Sunday but was dramatically rescued after a long chase by police from neighbouring Faridabad.

The woman, who works at a mall in Gurgaon, was returning home along with a colleague and two relatives when the men intercepted their car near Ghitorni Metro Station and abducted her after beating her friends and the cab driver.

It was the cab driver's alertness that helped police rescue the woman as he managed to inform police about the abduction, Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said.

The arrested have been identified as Kartar Singh (22), a BSc final-year student who also runs a play school in partnership with his sister, and Pramod Singh (23), a final year BBA student. Their three friends Ravish Nagar, Deepak and Arun are absconding.

"The incident leading to the abduction came after a party in Faridabad to celebrate Kartar buying a new SUV. They consumed liquor and then proceeded to Gurgaon. They tried to gain entry into a night club in Gurgaon but were not allowed.

"Subsequently, they went to the mall where they spotted the victim and others. They had a verbal altercation with the victim. As the women left the mall, the men chased them and intercepted them near Ghitorni. They abducted one of the girls and fled from the spot towards Faridabad," Sharma said.

Police received a call at around 3.30 am and immediately, night patrolling parties and picket staff were alerted and intensive checking of vehicles began.

According to the victim, she along with two of her relatives was returning home after the mall was closed at two am. They hired a private cab to go home.

"The cab they were travelling in was intercepted and as soon as the driver stopped the vehicle, the men dragged the victim into their SUV. When the complainant and other girls resisted, they beat them up," Sharma said.

After abducting one of the girls, she claimed, they also took away mobile phones of the remaining girls and keys of the cab to ensure that they could not follow them or intimate police.

However, the driver Amit had a mobile phone and once the accused left, he immediately made a call to police informing that the victim was forced into a brand-new SUV without a registration number.

Explaining the sequence of events, Sharma said, the men drove towards Andheria Mod and then Aya Nagar so that they could reach Faridabad quickly.

"At Aya Nagar, they saw vehicles being checked and they immediately took a 'U' turn on the wrong carriage way and sped away. Their plan was to take an unconventional route via Jaunapur to reach the highway connecting Gurgaon and Faridabad so that they could make a hasty exit from Delhi," Sharma said.

However, the men could not succeed in it as a police party intercepted them before they reached Jaunapur and forced them to take another 'U' turn.

"In their haste to escape, they entered an alley which led to a dead end. Police party hit the Scorpio, a couple of times after giving suitable warning to stop. Seeing the dead end, the men were made to take a 'U' turn again and then both the vehicles came head on. Police party rammed their vehicle in such way that SUV was forced to stop," Sharma said.

The five men tried to run away but Kartar was caught near the car. At the same time, another motorcycle party also reached nearby and caught another accused Pramod.
