Court Seeks Police Reply On Bail Pleas Of Kanhaiya Kumar, 2 Others By August 26

Court Seeks Police Reply On Bail Pleas Of Kanhaiya Kumar, 2 Others By August 26

Kanhaiya Kumar has sought regular bail as his interim bail will expire on September 1st.

New Delhi: A court today asked Delhi Police to respond by August 26 to the bail applications of Jawaharlal National University Students' Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar and two other students in a sedition case relating to alleged anti-India sloganeering on campus in February.

Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh has passed the directions after the Delhi Police Special Cell sought time to respond to applications moved by Mr Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.

All three students, who are out on interim bail, had moved the trial court seeking regular bail.

Mr Kumar's move came after Delhi High Court on August 17 refused his application for regular bail and asked him to approach the sessions court for the same. The JNUSU president was granted interim bail by the high court on March 2 for six months. This bail will expire on September 1.

While granting interim bail to Mr Khalid and Mr Bhattacharya on March 18, the trial court had observed that the role attributed to Mr Kumar does not appear to be different from the allegations levelled against the other two accused.

The court had granted relief to the duo on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 25,000 with a surety of the same. As Mr Khalid and Mr Bhattacharya complied with this order, they were released till September 19.

It had also directed Mr Khalid and Mr Bhattacharya not to leave Delhi without its permission during the interim bail period and asked the duo to be available before the investigating officer as and when required.

The high court had earlier granted a six-month interim bail to Mr Kumar on the condition that he does not actively or passively participate in any activity which could be termed anti-national.

Mr Kumar was arrested on February 12 on sedition charges in connection with the February 8 event in JNU, where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised. Mr Khalid and Mr Bhattacharya were arrested later that month.
