Scotland beat Trinidad and Tobago 6-1 in hockey
New Delhi: Scotland handed a 6-1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago to register their first win in three matches in the Commonwealth Games women's hockey tournament on Thursday.

The Scots, who drew 1-1 with India in their opening tie before going down 2-1 to South Africa, could have won by a bigger margin but for some sloppy performance in energy-sapping heat at the Major Dhyan Chand stadium.

Captain Linda Clement put Scotland ahead in the fourth minute before Nikki Kidd scored the first of her two goals to go into the half-time 2-0 up.

Kidd, a 23-year-old penalty corner specialist, scored off a superb drag-flick in the 41st minute and forward Alison Bell slotted home two field goals inside five minutes.

Holly Cram pounced on a defensive lapse in the closing minutes to make it 6-0 for the Scots.

Trinidad and Tobago, reeling under big defeats to South Africa and Australia, finally managed to score their first goal of the tournament through Charlene Williams just a minute before the final hooter.

Clement said she was not happy with her team's show.

"We are pleased to win of course," said the striker. "The scoreline may appear convincing but we are disappointed with our performance. We can't blame the heat. It is more to do with ourselves.

"We have a rest day tomorrow (Friday) before we take on Australia. We cannot afford to make mistakes in that game."

Rival captain Patricia Alexis-Wright said the team was learning with each game.

"Scotland are a strong side," she said. "We prepared against them and we did manage to come back later in the second-half. We did not concede too many goals but we need to attack more.

"The biggest positive for us was that we managed to score our first goal. Charlene is a hard-worker. It was nice to see her efforts being rewarded finally."
