Thane Officers To Adopt Schools

Dr Mahendra Kalyankar told reporters yesterday evening that nearly 2,000 schools in the district will be adopted by officials of various departments.

Thane: In an innovative way to promote quality education, government officers in Thane district will adopt primary and secondary schools and actively take part in school affairs.

Newly appointed district collector Dr Mahendra Kalyankar told reporters yesterday evening that nearly 2,000 schools in the district will be adopted by officials of various departments.

This would be additional responsibility on them beside their departmental role.

The idea was put forth by divisional commissioner P K Deshmukh, who had come up with a proposal in a previous administration meeting that officers can be involved in looking after the overall activities of a school and can also devote sometime in teaching students to improve their quality.

The proposal was readily accepted by officials, he said.

Giving further details, Dr Kalyankar said it has been decided that an official will on every Friday visit the school and hold meeting with staffers and students to discuss issues.

They will also take measures to improve performance of pupils. In addition, the officer will take few classes.

"This is being done to improve overall Human Development Index of the district and you will see the results in coming months. A skill development centre is also being planned in Thane to impart skill development trainings to students," he said.

It will be done under CSR of Power Grid Corporation and JSW Group.
