Steel broker held for theft at friend's house

Mumbai: A 35-year-old steel trader from a well-to-do family has been arrested by the Ghatkopar unit of Mumbai crime branch for stealing gold and cash worth around Rs15.5 lakh from a friend's house on Dusshera day.

On October 17, the home of a senior executive working in a private firm was broken into at Swapna Nagari complex in Mulund and Rs95,000 in cash, along with gold ornaments worth around Rs14.5 lakh, was stolen.

The local police and officials from the crime branch started investigating the case, but could not make any breakthrough initially. The accused had used duplicate keys to enter the flat and had broken the steel cupboard with a hammer before decamping with the booty.

Police inspector Vinayak Vast from the Ghatkopar unit of crime branch said, "The use of duplicate keys pointed to the involvement of someone known to the family. We questioned several such people and zeroed in on Prakash Natwarlal Sheth. During interrogation, Sheth confessed to the crime and told us where he had stashed the loot. Cash and gold worth around Rs15.37 lakh have been recovered from him."

Sheth had suffered huge losses in business and was also suffering from a serious kidney ailment. He knew the complainant's family since the last five years and was aware that the family will be going out for a Dusshera function on that day. He had got the keys duplicated without the complainant's knowledge and was waiting for the right time to strike.
