Ragging caused loss of vision, alleges student

Kochi: A student studying in second year of Electronics and Communication in a Tamil Nadu-based Engineering College has alleged he was ragged and assaulted by senior students, resulting in injury to his right eye and loss of vision.

Twenty one-year-old Abdul Latheef of National College of Engineering, Maruthakulam in Tirunelveli along with his mother Ashida alleged that he was assaulted on March 19 while he was watching a football match and later in the hostel.

Speaking to reporters in kochi, Latheef, who belongs to Changanachery in Kerala, said he was also threatened with dire consequences, if he reported it to anyone.

He underwent surgery to his injured eye on April 5 at Ernakulam and the doctor had said he would have permanent disability to his right eye.

Alleging that the Principal had refused to accept the written complaint he had sent, Latheef said copies of the letter had been sent to the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi, DGP Chennai and DGP Kerala urging for an inquiry into the matter.
