Politicians, actors take to public transport in Kochi

Kochi: In a unique move to encourage people to use public transport, politicians and film actors travelled by city buses here today.

'Bus day' was observed in the city with the motor vehicles department and district administration asking people to use public transport rather than their private vehicles.

Kerala Transport Minister Jose Thettayil boarded a low floor KSRTC bus at Angamally, while actors Dileep, Siddique, Bala and Ramya Nambeeshan took different buses to reach the collectorate at Kakkanad. They all spoke in one voice asking the public to rely on buses than cars and bikes.

Thettayil said use of public transport would ensure lesser traffic bottlenecks and pollution problems in the city.

The system of carpooling should develop in Kochi, he said. Low floor airconditioned and non-airconditioned buses were plying to various parts of the city and the public should use them instead of travelling in cars, he said.

Kochi Mayor, Tony Chammany, Deputy Mayor Bhadra Suresh and District collector, M Beena, also travelled by city buses.

Kochi is facing severe traffic snarls with long queues of vehicles seen in many main roads during non peak hours also.
