Man held for giving extortion threat to former employer

New Delhi: A 19-year-old man was arrested in the national capital for allegedly attempting to extort money from his former employer after being inspired by a movie, police said on Monday.

The arrested have been identified as Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Shalimar Bagh.

He allegedly attempted to extort Rs 22 lakh from his former employer Rajesh Jain, a dealer in spare parts, on Roshanara Road.

The arrest came following investigations into a complaint filed by Jain that he was received numerous threat calls on his mobile phone demanding Rs 22 lakh.

During technical surveillance, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said, Singh was found to be allegedly involved in the act.

"Singh was the only person who had been making threat calls to the complainant, he was arrested yesterday," Sharma said. During interrogation, she said, Singh told police that he was working in the office of Jain and had left the job just three months ago.

"Singh told us that he was inspired by a a movie in which an extortionist had extorted huge money from a businessman after designing a foolproof plan," Sharma said.

He allegedly managed to procure a SIM card on bogus identity and made several calls to Jain to extort money from him.
