Jan'26 Car Sales: Maruti Suzuki Retains Top Spot, Followed By These Brands

India's passenger vehicle market began 2026 on an upbeat note, as leading automakers posted strong sales in January, boosted by continued demand momentum stemming from GST-led festive season reforms last year. Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker, retained its top position with total domestic passenger vehicle dispatches at 1,74,529 units, marginally higher than 1,73,599 units in January 2025.

Sales of Maruti's mini cars, including Alto and S-Presso, rose slightly to 14,268 units, while compact models such as Baleno, Dzire, Ignis, and Swift saw a dip to 72,738 units from 82,241 a year ago. The company's SUV lineup, including Grand Vitara, Victoris, and Brezza, continued to power growth, with utility vehicle sales jumping to 75,609 units against 65,093 last year.

Maruti Suzuki Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) Partho Banerjee said the company achieved its highest-ever monthly total sales of 2,36,963 units, fueled by robust booking inflows of over 2.78 lakh units, marking a 25 percent year-on-year rise. He added that the new SUV Victoris has reached a milestone of 50,000 units in just five months.

Among other automakers, Tata Motors closely followed Maruti Suzuki with strong growth, with domestic sales soaring 46 percent to 70,222 units, while Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 25 percent increase to 63,510 units. Hyundai Motor India followed with a 9 percent rise to 59,107 units, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor logged a 17 percent jump to 30,630 units.

Kia India also maintained firm momentum, with sales up 10 percent to 27,603 units, driven by sustained demand for its Seltos, Sonet, and Carens Clavis models. "The encouraging start to 2026 reflects the strong trust customers place in the Kia brand," said Atul Sood, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing.

French automaker Renault India posted a robust 34 percent jump in wholesale figures to 3,715 units, benefiting from refreshed model demand.
