- Damaged or worn FASTags cause scanning failures and delays at toll plazas
- Exposure to sun, heat, dust, and rain weakens FASTag components over time
- Frequent windshield cleaning with harsh agents can damage the RFID chip
If you're frequently experiencing delays at toll plazas despite having an active FASTag, the problem may not be the toll system, but the FASTag itself. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued an advisory highlighting that damaged or worn-out FASTags are a common reason behind scanning failures and long queues at toll booths.
According to NHAI, FASTag damage can occur over time due to everyday exposure to the sun, affecting the tag's ability to communicate with scanners installed at toll plazas.

Why FASTags Get Damaged?
NHAI points out three primary reasons behind FASTag malfunction:
- Frequent windshield cleaning: Excessive rubbing or use of harsh cleaning agents can damage the tag's embedded RFID chip.
- Heat, dust, and rain exposure: Prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions weakens the adhesive and internal components.
- Old or worn-out FASTags: Tags typically degrade over time, especially after years of use.

When Should You Replace Your FASTag?
Motorists are advised to consider FASTag replacement if:
- The FASTag is more than five years old
- You are frequently facing scan failures or toll delays
A faulty FASTag can disrupt smooth travel and cause unnecessary stoppages at toll plazas, even if the linked account has sufficient balance.
What Should Vehicle Owners Do?
NHAI recommends contacting your issuer bank - the bank that issued your FASTag-to request a replacement. Replacing a damaged FASTag ensures quicker toll passage and helps reduce congestion at toll booths.
With barrier-less tolling and MLFF systems being gradually introduced across highways, maintaining a functional FASTag is becoming more important than ever.
If your FASTag isn't scanning properly, replacing it early can save time, avoid inconvenience, and ensure a smoother highway experience.
