Many drivers remain unaware of certain traffic rules, and some regulations often lead to confusion. One such debated issue is whether driving a car while wearing slippers or flip-flops is acceptable. For years, rumours and differing opinions have circulated, with some traffic police officers insisting that such a rule exists. This has raised questions among the public, as many view slippers as casual footwear rather than unsafe. The debate continues to spark discussion, highlighting the importance of clear awareness about driving regulations and the consequences of misunderstanding them.
In reality, traffic laws do not penalize drivers for wearing slippers. Whether one drives in shoes or slippers, there is no provision in the Motor Vehicles Act that allows for a challan to be issued on this basis.

In fact, in September 2019, the office of Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari clarified through an X post that no such rule exists. The updated regulations confirm that driving in slippers is not punishable. However, while legally permissible, experts strongly recommend wearing proper shoes for safety reasons.

Shoes provide better grip, stability, and control over the pedals compared to slippers or sandals. They reduce the risk of slipping off the brake or accelerator, especially in sudden situations where quick reactions are vital. Proper footwear also ensures consistent pressure is applied to the pedals, offering greater precision. Slippers, on the other hand, can easily shift, slide, or even get stuck, leading to dangerous delays in response. This makes them less reliable when it comes to handling unexpected road conditions.

Choosing sturdy footwear enhances overall driving safety, minimizes distractions, and allows drivers to operate vehicles with more confidence. While the law does not prohibit slippers, the practical risks associated with them make shoes the better option.
