Maharashtra Assembly Election: Fact File

Mumbai: A sizeable electorate of 8.35 crore voters are eligible to decide the fate of more than 4,000 candidates as Maharashtra goes to polls today to elect a new government.

Along with voting in 288 Assembly constituencies across the state, polling will also take place in the lone parliamentary seat of Beed, where late Union Minister Gopinath Munde's daughter is contesting on a BJP ticket.

Out of 288 Assembly seats, 29 seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes while 25 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

This is the first election in which all four major parties -- the Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and the BJP are fighting separately. In late September, both Shiv Sena-BJP and the Congress-NCP alliances had suffered a break-down due to seat-share disagreements

While the BJP is contesting on 257 seats and its smaller allies fighting on the remaining 31 seats, the Shiv Sena is contesting on 286 seats in the state.

Tight security has been deployed at all the 91,376 polling stations across the state, out of which more than 9,900 are classified as "hyper-sensitive."
