Mumbai: Despite a sore throat and Opposition criticism over his slew of poll rallies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today continued his election campaign in Maharashtra as he predicted doom for Congress, saying the party cannot be revived and "is dying due to its sins".

Addressing election meetings at Hingoli, Dhamangaon and Brahmapuri, Mr Modi made uncharacteristically short speeches because of a bad throat during which he asked the voters to rid the state of "dynastic" elements and "uncle-nephew" nexus, apparently targeting NCP chief Sharad Pawar and his nephew and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

"There is no way that Congress can be revived. Now, nobody can save Congress. It is dying due to its sins," Modi said, addressing a poll rally at Hingoli in Marathwada region.

He said though the country's poor gave power to Congress for 60 years, the party did not care for them.

"What did the poor people of India not give Congress party? They gave it power for 60 years but got nothing in return," Mr Modi said.

"Congress sought votes in the name of poverty, but did nothing for the poor. Only a handful of families prospered. They ate the "malai" (cream). They enjoyed," he said.

Mr Modi said on October 15 the people will sound the "death knell" for the 15-year-old "corrupt Congress-NCP regime".

Addressing a rally at Dhamangaon in Amravati district, Mr Modi referred to incidents of suicide by debt-ridden farmers of Vidarbha region growing cotton and oranges.

"Our farmers produce oranges that are famous the world over but, instead of succulent juice of the fruit, they have to drink poison," he said.

The Prime Minister said the NDA government has started a unique programme for cotton farmers called the "5F Formula".

"We have started a programme for farmers which we call the 5F Formula. Farmers who 'farm' cotton will be given assistance in their backyard to produce yarn.

"The yarn produced at the village will be used there itself to make fabric and the fabric thus produced will be used for making ready-made garments. The government will then help the final product reach foreign markets," he said.

Mr Modi attacked Congress and NCP over corruption and asked the electorate to give BJP an absolute majority in the poll.
