Anger, Protests On Streets Of Kerala After Barbaric Rape And Murder Of Student

The protests are in sharp contrast to the stoic silence the town witnessed for the first five days since the savage murder.

Perambavoor: There was anger and protests on the streets of Perambavoor town in Kerala's Ernakulam district on Wednesday, a week after the brutal murder and alleged rape of a 30-year-old law student.

The protests are in sharp contrast to the stoic silence the town witnessed for the first five days since the savage murder.

It's on the seventh day that Chief Minister Minister Oommen Chandy visited the traumatised mother and sister in hospital - offering them a government job and financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh. His visit was soon followed by the Opposition Leader VS Achuthanandan's. Kerala is in the midst of its election.

On being asked about the fear of evidences being destroyed, Mr Chandy said, "I assure you there won't be any lapses legally. And the government is taking this case very seriously."

The police in their latest report before the court have included rape charges, as opposed to the first FIR of only murder.

Sources said that the police ignored the past complaints of the mother regarding their safety, an allegation the police has denied.

Questioning over 100 people, the police have formed a sketch of a suspect after being under fire by activists for delay in action. However, no arrests have been made yet.

The Dalit student was stabbed 30 times and found by her mother with her intestines pulled out. Her back was covered with bite marks. It was only yesterday that the police cordoned off her house as a crime scene and brought in forensic experts to collect evidence, fuelling public anger over the crime and the lax response to it.
