The Supreme Court today agreed to examine a law governing divorce for Christians that prescribes two years of trial separation, instead of one year as it is for other communities.
The top court issued a notice to the Centre on a petition that argues that the law is discriminatory as only Christians are required to have a separation period of two years before they can be granted divorce on mutual consent.
Albert Antony, the petitioner, said the law violates the right to equality and right to life guaranteed by the Constitution.
