India Can Learn a Lot From Singapore, Says PM Modi: Highlights
Singapore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the Indian community in Singapore on last day of his 2-day visit to the city-state.

Here are the highlights of his speech:
  • Namaste, Vankkkam!
  • I have come to this place earlier, but today the scene is different.
No one in India can imagine that this is the mood in Singapore. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.
  • Today the world is looking at India. The reason for this new found confidence is not Modi, but those Indians who have settled abroad.
  • Whichever country you went to, you made it your own country despite good or bad circumstances.
  • Last year, I came to Singapore in March. I had come to pay my last respects to Lee Kuan Yew, the legend, the great man, who transformed village of  fishermen into what it is today.
  • India is a great country. But India has a lot to learn from Singapore.
  • 50 years ago, the legend of Singapore thought about cleanliness...can't India do the same?
  • No country is made because of governments, neither it grows because of governments.
  • A country grows because of its people. Today every one in India wants change. They don't want their country to be dirty anymore.
  • India is ready to fulfill the dreams of Swami Vivekananda.
  • Before elections, journalists used to ask me- Modi ji how will be your foreign policy?  They thought I am not experienced enough.
  • My only reply was na hum aankh jhuka ke baat karenge, na aankh dikhake, hum aankh mila ke baat karenge (we won't cower, we won't be combative. We will look the world in the eye and talk).
  • There was a time when there was either dollar or pound. For the first time we are entering the world in form of rupee. This is because there is trust for India across the world.
  • First time at the London Stock Exchange, we are pushing for the Rupee Bond. Anyone in the world can invest in them. This is the value of our Rupee. The Rupee Bond is an example of India's financial success globally.
  • India is a youthful country. 800 million people are below 35 years of age in India. We have demographic dividend. A country which is so young should have youthful dreams.
  • We are working on skill development with Singapore, Germany, USA. It is a movement that we have started.
  • My aim is that whoever is the best in the world should come to India. And our best should join ranks with the best in the world.
  • At time, when the world is talking about climate change, India has a major role to play.
  • We want energy but without damaging the environment.
  • No one thought about going beyond megawatt, for the first time, we have thought in terms of 175 gigawatt renewable energy. We want renewable energy, wind energy and nuclear energy.
  • Solar energy can become the best source of clean energy for India. Hence, we propose an International Solar Alliance.
  • World has become interdependent, no nation can afford to remain isolated.
  • The United Nations declared June 21 as Yoga Day that brought the world together.
